On July 28, 2010, our Nation experienced a terrible loss. A Boeing C-17 cargo plane crashed on Elmendorf Air Force Base during a practice flight for an upcoming air show, killing the four crew members aboard. The crew consisted of: Major Michael Freyholtz, 34, of Hines, Minnesota; Major Aaron Malone, 36, of Anchorage, Alaska; Captain Jeffrey Hill, 31, of York, Pennsylvania; and Senior Master Sgt. Thomas Cicardo, 47, of Anchorage, Alaska.

Maj. Freyholtz and Maj. Malone were pilots assigned to the Alaska Air National Guard's 249th Airlift Squadron. SMSgt Cicardo was a loadmaster in the 249th Airlift Squadron and affiliated with the Alaska National Guard. Capt. Hill was an active duty pilot assigned to the 517th Airlift Squadron at Elmendorf Air Force Base, now known as Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
